Rules of Debate and spesker's job


Rules of the debate
The system of the debate is Australasian Parliamentary System
Phases:
  • Preliminary round I : 21 teams + swing team
  • Preliminary round II : 10 teams / 11 teams = swing team
  • Semifinal round : 4 teams
  • Final round : 2 teams

Case Building
Case building is discussing with your team about what you will say in the debate and how you will oppose the opponent’s arguments.
  • Each team will be given 15 minutes to do the case building
  • There will be no additional time for debaters that came late for the case building.
  • If 15 minutes after the case building the debaters don’t come, they will be disqualified. The guarantee money will NOT be given back.

Scoring
  • Matter: on what the content of your debate is (arguments, facts, examples)
  • Manner: the style of your debate (eye contact, voice, language, etc.)
  • Method: the effectiveness of the structure

Timing
Each speaker is given 5 minutes 20 seconds to deliver their speech.
The reply speaker is given 3 minutes 20 seconds to deliver their speech.


Roles of the Speakers
1st speaker positive
  • Defines the motion
  • Presents the positive’s theme line
  • Team split of the affirmative team
  • Delivers some arguments of his/her team split

1st speaker negative
  • Rebutts the 1st affirmative
  • Mapping
  • Presents the negative’s theme line
  • Presents negative’s team split
  • Delivers his/her part of arguments

2nd speaker positive
  • Rebutts the 1st negative
  • Mapping
  • Delivers his/her part of arguments
  • Explains the main arguments of the positive team

2nd speaker negative
  • Rebutts the 1st and 2nd positive
  • Mapping
  • Delivers his/her part of arguments
  • Explains the main arguments of the negative team

3rd speaker positive
  • Rebutts the 1st and 2nd negative
  • Mapping
  • Rebuild the positive team’s case
  • Reinforce the rebuttals by the team mates
  • Summarize the debate

3rd speaker negative
  • Rebutts the 1st , 2nd and 3rd negative
  • Mapping
  • Rebuild the negative team’s case
  • Reinforce the rebuttals by the team mates
  • Summarize the debate

Reply speakers
  • Recap the debate
  • Convince the adjudicator that your team should win
