Australlian debate

What's debate?
Debate is about developing our communication skills. Debate is organizing arguments, persuading, and entertaining an audience, and using a language to show that our arguments are better than the opponent’s.Debate is NOT about teasing or attacking others.

Who are the debaters?

A debate needs two teams:
  positive/affirmative team agrees
  negative team disagrees

Each team needs 3 people:
  1st speaker
  2nd speaker
  3rd speaker
Reply speaker (from the 1st or 2nd speaker)

Order of debate

Motion

Motion or topic is a statement of what the debate should be about.

  •  The positive team agrees to the motion.
  •  The negative team disagrees to the motion.

Examples:

  •  THBT zoos are cruel
  •  THBT Komisi Penyiaran Indonesia has failed to do their job
  •  THW ban cosmetic surgery

Definition

The positive team must give the definition of the motion to clarify it. The definition gives a limit of the debate so the debate will focus.
The definition must be:

  •  debatable
  •  clear and logical

Case

Each team must bring a case. A case is a collection of arguments with a main idea.
A case consists of:

  •  facts
  •  examples
  •  explanations
Theme line
Theme line is the “why” of the motion: why this motion is true or false.
Theme line is very important because it is the basic logic of the debate.

Team spilt

Team split is the distribution of the arguments among the speakers.
There are two ways to make a team split:

  •  according to the aspects. E.g. political and economical
  •  direct distribution
Arguments
An argument must have:
Assertion: statement
Reasoning: logical explanation
Evidence : Proof
Link back  : that's why

Rebuttal
Rebuttal is the process of proving that the opponent is wrong and that we are right
We could show that the opponent’s arguments are:
  •  illogical
  •  irrelevant
  •  involves unacceptable implications
  •  has little weight
  •  has contradiction
